How it started

It was 2020 and COVID changed everything. How we work. Where we live. Tiger King. Why didn’t dating change too?

Why are we still mindlessly swiping?

Why is this algorithm showing us profiles we have absolutely nothing in common with?

When we can work anywhere, why are we stuck looking at profiles within a certain radius?

We thought, there has to be a better way. Now there is a better way.

Three years (and a lot of iterations) later, Surf was born.

Powered by search, not swipe

Most dating apps want you to stay on their app as long as possible. They force you to waste time swiping through hundreds of profiles for every one profile you’ll message.

Call us crazy, but Surf’s objective is to help you find someone you might actually be interested in dating. No. More. Swiping. Instead, you are in control of the profiles you see. Search by interests, job, location, school, hometown, age...etc. Once you search, all relevant results will be presented in the “grid." Adjust your search for different results.

It’s who you know, ya know?

Sure, some soulmates give each other the look in the paper towel aisle at Whole Foods and decide to get married. They meet randomly at a bar, coffee shop, or get stuck in an elevator together for 5 hours. We are happy for them. Honestly. They’re the chosen ones. But for the rest of us, there is typically a connection in common. That’s how people meet.

The question became, how can we create a dating app that’s more like real life? How do we create a community relevant for every user? A platform that helps you meet that friend-of-a-friend-of-a-friend?

Surf prioritizes connectivity. Unlike other apps, Surf isn’t launching in one specific geographic location. Instead, we are establishing commonality by prioritizing mutual connections.

Our waitlist operates on a unique principle - the more connected you are to other users, the sooner you get off the waitlist. As your friends join, your connectivity score rises, and you move up the ranks.

Prioritizing connectivity ensures every user has a relevant community on the app while expanding organically (it’s organic!). No more arbitrary algorithms judging if you’re good enough.

Still looking for a rando? Don’t worry, we’ll have plenty of those too.

So get in the know and stop swiping, start Surfing.
